1978 Jeep CJ5, "Big Black"

Big Black was a great looking Jeep. From the moment I laid eyes on it I knew we had to have it. I was doing some Jeep networking online when I found Big Black and just a few hours later we were packed up and heading out of state to the foothills of the great Smoky Mountains in good ol' Tennessee.

The owner decided to meet us off an obscure exit as he said his property doesn't come up on Google Maps. We met at a DOT salt station, exchanged quick conversation and we were off back down to Atlanta.

Driving this Jeep two hours home was a comical adventure. It was swaying all over the road and had four different tires on it. I always like to drive these things home no matter their condition so I can figure out how it behaves and what it really needs. It's one of my rules. If it can't be driven home I'm not interested. Every time an 18 wheeler drove past me it blew me almost clear into the next lane, very scary. As I held on for dear life I eventually made it back safe.

Big Black was in pristine condition - and the fun was about to begin. After taking numerous pieces apart the entire engine, undercarriage, interior and dash were stripped, cleaned and detailed. New tires and interior pieces amongst a host of other small items were replaced and restored. The interior tub was repainted as well as the undercarriage. After getting it shined up and dialed in it was off to a new home back in Tennessee. A great Jeep to a great new owner.
